It is a massive 5 acre shopping destination that consists of more 300 exclusive departments and covers 1 million square feet of marketplace. People travel from all over the world make yearly pilgrimages to shop at Harrods, whose staff is noted for their flair in personalized customer service. On peak days the department store receives over 300,000 visitors to its brick-and-mortar location. Harrods luxurious in-store experience is like no other; its Knightsbridge location is one of London’s leading tourist destinations.
The luxury brand has set an unmatchable standard in excellence when it comes to providing their customers with whatever their hearts desire (and their wallets can afford!). This focus on premium customer experience is evident in Harrods’ Latin motto Omnia Omnibus Ubique which means “all things for all people, everywhere”. Customers can purchase anything under the Sun at Harrods, from rare chocolates to Hello Kitty stationary; the product range is expansive and endless.
Harrods first came into existence back in 1824 when its founder, Charles Henry Harrod, opened his clothing and linens store in Southwark, London. An interesting anecdote from Harrods’ rich history involves brandy and an escalator! Apparently, Harrods showcased England’s first-ever escalator or “moving staircase” in 1898 at the Knightsbridge location. Customers at the time had never such a contraption before and were so nervous that the staff offered smelling salts as well as brandy to those brave customers who made it to the top without incident.
In addition to the wide-ranging inventory, the Harrods experience is exemplified by its high-end range of in-house restaurants. Shoppers can take their pick 32 eateries to replenish their energy during a visit to the mega-store. There is everything from tapas to high-tea available to traditional British pub fare to even fine-dining on offer at Harrods. Harrods’ branded personal shopping assistant programme, called “By Appointment”, allows shoppers to peruse departments of their choice without dealing with other customers. Harrods also has a pharmacy that honours prescriptions, a full-scale beauty salon and spa, a watch repair shop for branded watches, an experience wine steward and a classic barber’s shop. Harrods departmental store is open to its customers 7 days a week, Mondays through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a special ‘browsing only’ session from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sundays.
